Summary

Despite the increasing treatment options, most IBD patients require life-long medication and sometimes hospitalisation and abdominal surgery. However, since the introduction of biologics for the management of IBD, distribution of direct costs of IBD have shifted from being driven mostly by hospitalisations and surgery to being driven mainly by the use of biologics.

There have been no detailed studies undertaken within the UK National Health Service (NHS) and therefore, little is known about healthcare resource utilisation of people with IBD in the UK. To address this gap, we will conduct a cross-sectional survey in a large cohort of IBD patients.

We propose to recruit survey participants from IBD BioResource, Crohn’s and Colitis UK and Royal London Hospital.

The primary research questions for this survey are:
What is the cost of care and productivity loss for people with IBD in the UK?
What are the main cost drivers of IBD management?

Secondary research questions include the measurement of participants’ health-related quality of life and the comparison of self-report and patient electronic records regarding hospital resource use for the same 3-month period.

This is a self-completed survey. People with IBD will be sent an email with a link to an online version of the survey. Questions will include use of healthcare and personal care and other resources, IBD severity score, IBD-control from the patient’s perspective, work productivity and activity impairment, quality of life score and clinical, lifestyle and sociodemographic characteristics.
