Summary
We are interested in why some people get diabetes while others do not. We believe that this relates to the genes which we have inherited from our parents: the genes being the building blocks that determine the colour of our hair and eyes and the shape of our bodies. Some genes determine how we respond to infections, diet and other things in the environment. If we could understand more about these genes, we might be able to improve the treatment of diabetes and stop people getting diabetes in the future.
To try and understand more about these we aim to recruit 2,000 participants from NHSBT and the Cambridge BioResource. We are asking the study participants to give a blood sample up to four times per year and to answer a few questions on the details of their medical history.
Ultimately, we hope this will lead to preventive treatment in these at risk individuals.
Organisation: This study is organised by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation/Wellcome Trust Diabetes and Inflammation Laboratory situated on the Addenbrooke’s Hospital site in Cambridge. The principal investigator for this study is Professor John Todd.
